While the term "digital storytelling" is used widely in the nonprofit sector to refer to a variety of methods for producing short-form videos, it is the pioneering U.S. and international work of StoryCenter (formerly the Center for Digital Storytelling) that best illustrates how participatory media and narrative approaches can surface community voices and further nonprofit goals.

Long-term StoryCenter staff member Andrea Spagat will talk in this workshop about why first-person stories are so compelling and how nonprofits can engage their clients and funders in bringing powerful personal stories into public viewing arenas. Participants will come away with:

  • A nuanced understanding of the theory, ethics, and practice of digital storytelling;
  • Experience (through hands-on activities) with what it 's like to share a story with an attuned listener; and
  • Clarity about how digital storytelling can help nonprofits reach and mobilize community members, increase organizational visibility, and engage funders and policymakers.
